Overview

A tour exclusively focused on Cambodia's capital architectural treasure-troves, from ancient temples to extravagant palaces.

If you are into architecture, you shouldn’t miss this very special tour around Phnom Penh, graceful capital that was once known as the ‘Pearl of Asia’ and a timeless throwback to an ancient Asia.  The riverfront area remains one of the most attractive in the region and is perfect for a late afternoon stroll.  The tinkle of music from ancient temples, saffron-clad monks wandering and street hawkers with bubbling cauldrons will immerse us in the past, while our architectural guide will provide us with insight about the architectonic heritage of Phnom Penh.

Highlights

  • The historical sites that survived and remain almost intact.
  • The ubiquitous ‘Chinese shop-house-style’ structures.
  • The late-19th/early-20th century French Colonial buildings encompassing a range of influences and styles.
  • The ‘New Khmer Architecture’ of the late-1950s/60s.

Day 1 Phnom Penh Architectural Tour (1/2 day)

Meals: not included | Accommodation: not included

Almost every currently existing structure in Phnom Penh was built after the beginning of the French colonial period in 1863. The oldest part of the city stretches from the Wat Phnom area south to the Royal Palace and is also where most of the surviving colonial-era structures are found.

This half-day architectural tour will bring us face to face with the few remaining treasures that the city possesses, like the restored Post Office, the art-deco Central Market, the National Sports Complex or the University campuses of the city, a mix of grand French Colonial-era buildings and remnants of the New Khmer Architecture period that dominated the 50s and ‘60s.

Our guide, specialist in architecture, will definitely provide us with a full scope of the city’s impressive architectural ensemble.

Note: During the weekdays we can only guarantee an architectural guide if the booking is made well enough in advance. In case you are interested, please double check it with your Handspan Travel Consultant.
